What is a cookie?

A cookie is a harmless text file stored in your browser when visiting almost any website. The purpose of the cookie is to enable the website to remember your visit when navigating within such website again.

 

What is not a cookie?

It is not a virus, nor a Trojan, nor a worm, nor spam, nor spyware and it does not open pop-up windows.

 

Which information is stored in a cookie?

Cookies do not usually store sensitive information about you, such as credit cards or bank data, photographs, your ID or personal data, etc. The stored data are of a technical nature, personal preferences, personalized content, etc.

Web server does not identify you as an individual; it identifies your browser. In fact, if you usually navigate using Internet Explorer and start navigating within the same website using Firefox or Chrome, you can see that the website does not consider you as the same individual because it is identifying the browser and not the individual.

 

 

What kind of cookies exist?

  • Technical cookies: they are the most basic cookies and they aim to determine, among others, whether it is a human or an automated application that is navigating, whether it is an anonymous or a registered user. These are key tasks for the functioning of any dynamic web page.
  •  Analytic cookies: they collect information about the kind of navigation in course, the most visited sections, the consulted products, the time slots of use, language, etc.
  • Advertising cookies: they show advertisings related to your navigation, your country of origin, language, etc.

 

What are own or third-party cookies?

Own cookies are generated by the web page you are visiting and third-party cookies are generated by external services or providers such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

 

What if i disable cookies?

In order to understand the effects of disabling cookies please read the following examples:

  • You will not be able to share contents of the web page you are visiting with Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.
  • The web site will not be able to adapt its contents to your personal preferences, as it occurs regarding online shops.
  • You will not be able to access the personal area of such web site, as, for example, “My Account”, or “My Profile” or “My Orders”.
  • Online shops: It will not be possible to shop online; you can shop by phone or at physical stores if available.
  • It will not be possible to personalize your geographic preferences as time slot, currency or language.
  • The web site will not be able to make any analysis on visitors and traffic on the web site, which will make difficult the web page to be competitive.
  • You will not be able to post on blog, upload photographs, post comments, value or grade contents. The web site will not know if you are a human or an automated application that publishes spam.
  • It will not be possible to show sectioned advertising.
  • Every social network uses cookies, if you disable them you will not be able to use any of them.

 

 

Is it possible to delete cookies?

Yes. Not only delete them, but also block them, on a general or particular basis for a specific domain.

In order to delete cookies from a web site, you shall access browser settings where you can search for the cookies associated to the domain in question and delete them.

 

 

Cookies settings for the most popular browsers

The process to access to a specific cookie of Chrome browser is indicated below. Note: these steps may change according to the version of the browser:

  1.  Go to Settings or Preferences using the File menu or clicking on customization icon that appears at the top right.
    2.    You will see different sections, click on Show advance options.
    3.    Go to Privacy, Content Settings.
    4.    Select All cookies and web sites data.
    5.    A list detailing all cookies organized by domain will appear. In order to find the cookies of a specific domain more easily, insert, either wholly or in part, the domain address in field Search cookies.
    6.    After screening, the cookies of the requested web site will appear on the screen in one or several lines. Now you just have to select and click on X in order to eliminate the cookies.

 

In order to access cookies settings in Internet Explorer browser, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Go to Tools, Internet Options.
    2.    Click on Privacy.
    3.    Move the slider in order to adjust the desired level of privacy.

 

In order to access cookies settings in Firefox browser, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Go to Options or Preferences according to the operational system.
    2.    Click on Privacy.
    3.    In History select Use custom settings for history.
    4.    Now you will see Active cookies, you can active or disable them according to your preferences.

 

In order to access cookies settings in Safari OSX browser, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Go to Preferences, then Privacy.
    2.    You will see Block cookies where you can select the desired type of blockage.

 

In order to access cookies settings in Safari iOS browser, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Go to Settings, then Safari.
    2.    Go to Privacy and Security, you will see Block cookies where you can select the desired type of blockage.

 

In order to access cookies settings for Android devices, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Run the browser and click on Menu, then Settings.
    2.    Go to Security and Privacy,  you will see Active cookies where you can check or uncheck the box.

 

In order to access cookies settings for Windows Phone devices, please follow the steps below (they may change according to the version of the browser):

  1.  Open Internet Explorer, then More, then Settings.
    2.    Now you can check or uncheck the box Allow cookies.
